The Vielle
The Vielle, or Medaeval Fiddle is built with either a flat or arched bridge
for chordal (drone) style playing, or for melodic playing. It has
5 strings and a guitar-shaped flat body with 6 tied frets. The Vielle
is a predecessor of the Viola da Gamba, and of course, the modern violin.
My model employs the string length of a modern violin and it can be tuned
in fifths so learning to play the vielle is greatly simplified.
Historically, there were many tunings used in different periods and for
different styles.
