Lehmann Vielle

Medieval Fiddle - Treble and Tenor Models

The Vielle, or Medieval Fiddle is built with either a flat bridge for chordal (drone) style playing, or arched bridge for melodic playing.  It has 5 strings and a guitar-shaped flat body with 6 tied frets.  The Vielle is a predecessor of the Viola da Gamba, and of course, the modern violin. My Treble model employs the string length of a modern violin and it can be played under the chin or da gamba, as you wish  Historically, there were many tunings used in different periods and for different styles.

The Tenor Vielle has a 20" (508mm) string length and may be tuned G-c-e-a-d' or variations.  It is to be played da gamba style, held between the legs.

The vielle is set up with plain and overspun gut strings.  Options include PegHed brand geared viola pegs, chip-carved rosettes, Medieval bows, cases, and more.  Call or e-mail for complete price and option list(You can also choose from among our in stock models)

Model Rebec

3 String Medieval Fiddle

The rebec evolved from 9th c. Arabic instruments and gained popularity in 13th c. Europe for its cheerful melodic voice.  It is a 3 stringed Fiddle with a teardrop-shaped carved body and a flat top.  The Rebec has a bright sound, and is a wonderful solo melody instrument.  The Lehmann rebec is built with a string length like a modern violin, and is set up with 3 plain gut strings.  I make 2 treble models: standard and artist.  Bows and cases are available.  Call or e-mail for complete price and option list(You can also choose from among our in stock models)
